Will China's new hi-tech airport prove to be a flight of fancy? Praised as an architectural masterpiece, it has one small flaw: Nobody wants to fly there

• Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport's Terminal 3 opened yesterday with much fanfare and a flight to Mongolia
• It cost £612m, covers a staggering 4.3million square feet and can handle 45million passengers a year
• Designed by the Rome-based architect Studio Fuksas, it looks like vast white, honeycomb aeroplane
• It is also China's first airport with a 10-megawatt solar power plant that could power 10,000 US homes
• Also a Soviet aviation museum, Minsk World, and another about Britain's 'colonialist invasion' of the Opium Wars
• But the only European airline with flights from the airport is Finnair with one trip to capital Helsinki
• And the only flights to the US are cargo planes to Anchorage in Alaska

It's been hailed as an architectural masterstroke and symbol of China's explosion onto the world stage of global travel.
But Shenzhen International Airport's brand-new terminal has a problem: nobody seems to want to go there.
The £612million travel hub opened at 6am yesterday with much fanfare as a Shenzhen Airlines flight took off to next-door Mongolia.
Smiling staff handed out commemorative model planes to passengers on the flight as dozens of golf carts circulated the lounge to give free rides for anyone in need.
But despite claims on its website that tourists can be spirited away to far-flung locations including Sydney, Dubai and Cologne, no airlines actually appear to offer services to or from any of these cities, The Independent reported.

Quiet: Despite claims on its website that tourists can be spirited away to far-flung locations including Sydney, Dubai and Cologne, no airlines actually appear to offer services to or from any of these cities

In reality, flights only seem to go to regional destinations such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
The only US destination is Anchorage in Alaska - and those flights are all cargo deliveries by UPS and Federal Express - while there is only one direct flight to Europe from Chongqing, and that’s Finnair’s service to Helsinki.

Unlike the largest Chinese cities, Shenzhen does not allow a visa-free stopover.

Local travel: In reality, flights only seem to go to regional destinations such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore

Eco-port: The terminal resembles a giant white aeroplane covered in a perforated, honeycomb-like skin of metal and glass that admits maximum sunlight, reducing energy consumption while rainwater is recycled in toilets and used to water indoor plants

Solar powered: It is also the first airport in China to feature a 10-megawatt solar power plant, which cranks out enough power to support 10,000 US households per month

'One has to wonder who will fly here from outside China, given the choice of flights to Hong Kong and to Macau, both actively promoted in the UK, both nearby and both visa-free,' Neil Taylor, whose travel firm Regent Holidays pioneered travel to China, told the paper. 'Shenzhen had its appeal as a small village when China first opened up in the late 1970s, but tour operators will find it hard to promote now.'

Designed by the Rome-based architect Studio Fuksas, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport covers a staggering 4.3 million square feet (400,000 sq m) and is capable of handling 45 million passengers a year.
Among it’s tourist attractions is a former Soviet aircraft carrier (complete with fighter jets) called Minsk World. Another is Dapeng Fortress, a battle site during the 19th-century Opium Wars against the 'British colonial invaders'.

This is in part down to the industrialization of domestic travel but also thanks to increased interest from overseas.
Last week the French airline, Aigle Azur, announced a new link from Paris Orly to Beijing while British Airways this year added a link from Heathrow to Chengdu.
But foreign interest mostly concerns the country's major cities and tthe expected surge of connections from Europe to large 'secondary cities' in China has not materialised, reported the Independent.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor's relationship was one of the most scandalous and passionate to play out in public.
And the chemistry between the notorious twice-married couple is revealed in a recently uncovered love letter that Taylor wrote to Burton .
She describes how she can only 'boil and bubble' inside at the thought of the actor, and confesses her 'pure animal pleasure' for him.

But the racy note, written on the couple's 10th wedding anniversary (first time around), is bittersweet as they split just days later.
The letter dated March 15, 1974 has now been listed for auction at picollecta.com and is believed to be the first written message from Taylor to Burton to ever hit the market.

It has a minimum bid of £1,000 and is expected to sell for several times more than that. Bidding ends on December 12 at 7.09pm.
The couple had recently begun renting a house in Oroville, California while Burton was filming his latest movie The Klansman when Taylor wrote it.

Taylor had warned Burton from the start of their marriage in 1964 that she had zero tolerance for infidelity.
However during the filming of When Eagles Dare, Burton resumed an affair with co-star Mary Ure.
After that, Taylor made sure she was with on set with Burton every day in 1969 for the shooting of Anne Of The Thousand Days.
However, a further affair with co-star Genevieve Bujold lasted many years, and an affair with Nathalie Delon followed in 1972, along with rumours of an affair with Raquel Welch.

Taylor finally lost patience during the filming of The Klansman when Burton commenced an affair with 'a teenager, a hotel waitress and a string of other women'.
The love letter is accompanied by a note of provenance from Toni Hennings, the woman who rented the Oroville house to them.
'This letter written by Elizabeth Taylor while renting my home from Feb 15th til April 18th 1974. It was left behind - inside a book in a drawer under the master bedroom bed,' she writes.

Seasick sufferers look away now. A Florida-based firm has designed a floating city called Freedom Ship that would spend its entire time at sea.
The vessel is a mile long, 25-storeys-high and has enough room for 50,000 permanent residents.
It features schools, hospitals, art galleries, shops, parks, an aquarium, casino and even an art gallery as well as an airport on the roof and a docking bay at the rear.

Designed by the Florida-based Freedom Ship International, the floating city, concept pictured, is set to cost $10 billion and weigh 2.7 million tonnes - making it too large to ever dock. The ship would spend the whole time at sea, circling the globe once every two years, powered by solar and wave energy

This means the ocean community would spend the whole time at sea, circling the globe twice a year.
During this time, FSI claim the ship would spend 70 per cent offshore major cities and 30 per cent moving between countries.
The route would take the ship from the east coast of the U.S across the Atlantic Ocean into Europe, passing Italy before looping back and sailing around Africa, across to Australia, heading north into Asia before spending the end of the year on the west coast of America and into South America.  
In addition to the permanent residents, the Freedom Ship would also have room for an extra 30,000 daily visitors, 20,000 crew and 10,000 overnight guests.

Visitors and residents would be able to leave the ship, either by plane or by boat thanks to a dock at the rear, concept pictured, to visit cities and countries where the ship will also pick up supplies as and when needed

The planned route, pictured, would take the ship from the east coast of the U.S across the Atlantic into Europe, passing Italy before looping back and sailing around Africa and across to Australia. It would then travel into Asia before spending the end of the year on the west coast of the U.S and South America

The airport, on the ship’s top deck, would serve private and small commercial aircraft carrying up to 40 passengers each.
The whole ship will be 750ft wide, 350ft tall and 4,500 ft long - four times longer than the Queen Mary II cruise ship.
Roger M Gooch, director and vice-president of Freedom Ship International said: ‘The Freedom Ship will be the largest vessel ever built, and the first ever floating city.
‘This will be a very heavily capitalised project and the global economy in the last few years hasn't been too inviting for unproven progressive projects like ours.

In addition to 50,000 permanent residents, the Freedom Ship would also have room for an extra 30,000 daily visitors, 20,000 crew and 10,000 overnight guests

The airport, on the ship's top deck, pictured, would serve private and small commercial aircraft carrying up to 40 passengers each. It could also be used to fly supplies to the ship. Aircraft could land and takeoff even when the ship is moving

‘Happily, though it has experienced a hiatus, the Freedom Ship now looks as if it is a live project again.
‘In the last six months we're getting more interest in the project and we are hopeful we will raise the $1 billion to begin construction.’
Power for the vessel would come from various sources including wave and solar power and on-board generators.
Visitors will be able to leave the ship, either by plane or boat, to visit cities and countries where the ship will also pick up supplies as and when needed.

The vessel, concept pictured, is just an idea at the moment until the Florida-based designers can raise at least $1 billion to start construction. The company said following a hiatus, and a drop in the global economy, it has started receiving interest in the ship again and hopes to raise this funding soon

Swooping low over sunbathing holiday makers, or flying high with the birds, this stunning collection of images captures both the drama and the serenity of aircraft in flight.
Although many of us boarding a plane without a second thought and see an airliner glide through the skies above us almost every day, the collection gives a unique glimpse into the aviation world.
The dramatic photographs have been released by a specialist photography service and image library Airteam Images to celebrate its 10th birthday.

Over the past decade the photographs have been seen in publications and personal photo albums around the world, as the company, based in Coleshill, West Midlands, sell hundreds of their pictures to both commercial business and the general public.
Among some of the more exciting photographs in the collection are the flock of birds surrounding and Air Canada Boeing 777, a US Airways Boeing 757 coming into land seemingly just metres from a packed beach at St Maarten, Princess Juliana, The Netherlands, and a mid air display by the famed Red Arrows.

 

Director Derek Pedley said: 'We are the largest supplier of aviation images in the world.
'We have 200 photographers which I have handpicked and we have a portfolio of images that tell the whole history of aviation right back to the 1900s.

Mr Pedley's love of aircraft began when he was a child, making his love for the job even stronger. 
He said: 'I have a real fascination with planes, which was probably kickstarted by me growing up next to Birmingham Airport.

'I never thought I would make a living out of planes,' said Mr Pedley.
'It started out as a hobby and snowballed to the size it is now. 
'It's quite a unique collection but it's a one-stop shop for anything to do with aviation.'

For many 28-year-olds, the idea of starting a family can be a daunting prospect.
But one woman has embraced her matriarchal role with open arms, after welcoming her first great-grandchild into the family.
Kelly Baker from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, took on three step-children and their nine offspring when she married 68-year-old Bob in 2010.
But the 28-year-old couldn't be happier with their budding family, despite her husband being more than a decade older than both her parents and her eldest grandchild just three years her junior.

'It's so wonderful having a baby in the family,' says Mrs Baker, who has resigned hopes of children of her own.

 

Kelly, whose friends tried to warn her off grandfather Bob when they first met, loves grandchildren, Chanice, Amber, Warren, Chloe, Toby, Kamran, Arran, Jade and Tahra like her own.
Baby Layla who is just five-months-old is the first great-grandchild in the family.
'I feel like they're my own family, we spoil them rotten,' she told the Daily Mirror.

'Couldn't be happier': The couple married in 2010

The couple who work together as cleaners met when Kelly was just 21, after the pensioner stopped seeing one of her friends who was also in her twenties.
Having endured the harsh criticisms of friends and families, Bob proposed after four years of dating.
While Mrs Baker has given up on the idea of having their own children, father-of-nine husband Bob insists 'never say never,' though admits the family is 'quite large enough.' 
Mrs Baker describes meeting her spouse's three children, the youngest of whom is ten years older than she, as one of the hardest things about their relationship.
'But once they had gotten to know me they were very accepting and we've since become close'.
All 13 family members will spend Christmas together in a local pub for a 'huge dinner', the couple say.
And though naysayers sometimes hurt her feelings with 'snide comments', Kelly insists she has proved 'everyone' wrong with her marriage that is as happy as she could hope for.

‘અન્યનું એક વાંકું આપના અઢારેઅઢાર વાંકાં’ જેવો ઘાટ ઘડાતો હોય છે. આ જગતમાં કોઈ સર્વગુણસંપન્ન નથી. દરેક માણસમાં ગુણ-દોષ રહેલા છે. માણસે સારું જોવું, સારું બોલવું અને સારું સાંભળવું જોઈએ. બીજાના દોષો જોવા કરતાં ગુણો તરફ નજર કરવી જોઈએ. માણસ ગુણાનુરાગી બને તો તેને કશું ખરાબ દેખાય નહીં, પણ માણસનો સ્વભાવ છે ગુણો પોતાના જુએ છે અને દોષ બીજાના. ટીકા અને નિંદામાં ફરક છે. ટીકામાં શુભ ઈરાદો પણ હોય છે. સામા માણસના ભલા માટે, તેને ટપારવા માટે, તેને સુધારવા માટે કેટલીક વખત આકરું બોલવું પડે છે, પણ આમાં તમારો ઈરાદો શું છે તેના પર બધો આધાર છે. અને આમાં તમે ભાષાનો, શબ્દોનો કઈ રીતે ઉપયોગ કરો છો તે પણ મહત્ત્વનું છે. કેટલીક વખત સામા માણસને માઠું ન લાગે તે રીતે તેની ત્રુટિઓ તરફ ધ્યાન ખેંચી શકાય છે. નિંદાનું શાસ્ત્ર સાવ અલગ છે. તે માણસની ગેરહાજરીમાં થતી હોય છે. આલોચના અને ટીકામાં પણ જો અતિરેક થાય તો તે નિંદા બની જાય છે. આલોચનામાં કરુણા હોય છે. સારાની ભાવના હોય છે. નિંદામાં ઘૃણા અને તિરસ્કાર હોય છે. ટીકા માણસને જાગૃત કરવા માટે થતી હોય છે, નિંદા માણસને પાછો પાડવા, મિટાવવા માટે થતી હોય છે. ટીકા અને આલોચનામાં સત્ય રહેલું છે, નિંદામાં જૂઠ. આલોચના મૈત્રીપૂર્ણ છે. ભલે તે ગમે તેટલી કઠોર હોય પણ તેમાં સામા માણસનું સારું કરવાનો ભાવ રહેલો છે. નિંદા ગમે તેટલી મીઠી મધુર હોય પણ તેમાં ઝેર રહેલું છે. અહંકારની ઈર્ષ્યાની ભાવનામાંથી નિંદા પ્રગટે છે. બીજાનું આપણે સારું જોઈ શકતા નથી એટલે તેમની નબળી બાજુને શોધવાનું મન થાય છે. હું તમારા કરતાં સારો છું, મોટો છું એ વાત સાબિત કરવાનું બહુ મુશ્કેલ છે, કારણ કે બધા લોકો આ વાતને સિદ્ધ કરવામાં લાગેલા છે. દરેક માણસનું લક્ષ્ય છે તે બીજા કરતાં સારો છે, ડાહ્યો છે, હોશિયાર છે, સમજદાર છે તે પુરવાર કરવાનું. માણસ પોતાની વાતચીતમાં, વર્તનમાં, દેખાવમાં આ બધા પ્રયાસો કરતો હોય છે. સારા હોવું અને સારા દેખાવું એ બંનેમાં ફરક છે. આ જગતમાં એકથી એક ચડિયાતા માણસો છે. દરેક જગ્યાએ શેરની માથે સવા શેર છે. આ બધામાં બીજા કરતાં હું સારો છું એ સિદ્ધ કરવાનું મુશ્કેલ છે, પરંતુ બીજાના દોષો, નબળાઈઓ આગળ કરીને આપણે તેના કરતાં સારા છીએ એવું મનને મનાવવાનું સરળ છે. આપણે ગમે તેવા મોટા માણસોની નિંદા કરી શકીએ છીએ. કોઈનું સારું બોલશો તો કોઈ વધારે વખત સાંભળી નહીં શકે, પરંતુ કોઈનું વાંકું બોલશો તો લોકો કાન દઈને સાંભળશે. એક ગામમાં એક માણસ રહેતો હતો. તેની વાત કોઈ સાંભળતું નહીં. લોકો તેને મૂર્ખ માનતા હતા. તે જે કાંઈ કહે તેને હસી કાઢતા હતા. કોઈ તેની વાતને ગંભીરતાથી લેતું નહોતું. આ માણસ પોતાની ઉપેક્ષાથી કંટાળી ગયો હતો. ગામમાં એક ફકીરનું આગમન થયું. તેણે આ ફકીરનાં ચરણો પકડયાં અને કહ્યું, ‘મને આમાંથી બચાવો. લોકો મને મૂર્ખ કહે છે. હું સારી વાતો કરું છું પણ તેઓ સાંભળવા તૈયાર નથી. લોકો મારું મહત્ત્વ સમજે એવું કાંઈક કરો.’ ફકીરે કહ્યું, ‘લોકો તારા તરફ ધ્યાન કેમ આપે તું સારી અને ડાહી વાતો કરી રહ્યો છે. કોઈની સારી વાત સાંભળવાની કોને ફુરસદ છે? આ માટે લોકોને સમય નથી. તું એક કામ કર, સારું બોલવાનું છોડી દે. લોકોનું વાંકું બોલવાનું, તેમની નિંદા કરવાનું શરૂ કરી દે. અહીંની વાત ત્યાં કર અને ત્યાંની વાત અહીં કરતો રહે. થોડું મીઠું-મરચું ભભરાવતો રહે. લોકો તને સામેથી બોલાવશે.’ આ માણસે જે હાજર ન હોય તેના અંગે નિંદા કરવાનું અને તેમની ખાનગી વાતો કહેવાનું શરૂ કરી દીધું. લોકો હવે કાન સરવા કરીને સાંભળવા લાગ્યા. નિંદામાં કોને રસ ન હોય? લોકો હવે આ માણસને સામેથી બોલાવવા લાગ્યા, કારણ તે તેની પાસેથી ગામની બે-ચાર નવી વાતો સાંભળવા મળતી. કોની સ્ત્રી ભાગી ગઈ, કોણ દારૂડિયો અને જુગારી છે, કોણ પૈસેટકે ખુવાર થઈ ગયો છે, કોણે બેઈમાની અને કાળા ધંધા કરીને પૈસા બનાવ્યા છે, કોણે બીજી સ્ત્રીને ઘરમાં બેસાડી છે, કોનું પ્રેમપ્રકરણ ચાલી રહ્યું છે. આવી બધી મસાલેદાર વાતો સાંભળવા માટે લોકો તેની આસપાસ ફરવા લાગ્યા. તેનાં માનપાન વધી ગયાં. તે આડુંઅવળું કેટલીક વખત ન સમજાય એવું મભમ બોલતો. લોકો તેને બુદ્ધિમાન સમજવા લાગ્યા. તેની વાતમાંથી તાગ કાઢવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરવા લાગ્યા. લોકો નિંદામાં ભારે કુશળ હોય છે. જલદીથી ખબર ન પડે તે રીતે ચતુરાઈથી બીજાનું ઘસાતું બોલીને પોતાની બડાઈ હાંકી લેતા હોય છે. નિંદાનો રસ એવો છે એમાં થોડાથી કોઈને તૃપ્તિ થતી નથી. એટલે જાતજાતના પ્રશ્ર્નો કરીને, આશ્ર્ચર્ય વ્યક્ત કરીને, પોતાનો અભિપ્રાય આપીને વાતના ઊંડાણમાં જવાનો પ્રયાસ કરતા હોય છે. સારા કહેવાતા માણસો ભલે મોઢેથી કશું બોલે નહીં, પણ ધ્યાન દઈને સાંભળી લેતા હોય છે. કેટલાક માણસોને આવું બધું સાંભળ્યા પછી વાત પેટમાં ટકતી નથી અને તેઓ આ વાત થોડી ઉમેરીને બીજાને કહેવા આતુર હોય છે. આમ નિંદાનો દોર અવિરતપણે ચાલ્યા કરે છે. જે લોકો બીજાની નિંદા કરે છે તેઓ પાછળથી આપણી પણ કરી શકે છે તેવો ખ્યાલ કોઈને આવતો નથી. જે લોકો કોઈની ગેરહાજરીમાં તેનું ખરાબ બોલી શકે છે તો તમારું પણ તેમ બોલી શકે છે. નિંદા પારકા લોકોની થાય છે એવું નથી, ઘરમાં પણ આવું થતું હોય છે. નિંદામાં પણ લોકો સારા થવાના પ્રયાસો કરતા હોય છે. બીજાનું પાંચ-દશ મિનિટ વાટ્યા પછી અને મનનો ઊભરો ઠાલવ્યા પછી કહેશે ‘જવા દોને’, આપણે બીજાની વાત કરીને શા માટે પાપમાં પડવું. એનાં કર્યાં એ ભોગવશે. ઉપરવાળો તો બધું જોઈ રહ્યો છે.’ નિંદાનો રસ  અદભૂત   છે. સામા માણસ પ્રત્યે સહાનુભૂતિ બતાવીને, તેને પંપાળી- પંપાળીને આની મજા લેવામાં આવે છે. કોઈ માણસ મુશ્કેલીમાં મુકાયો હોય, દુ:ખ આવી પડ્યું હોય, માનહાનિ થઈ હોય ત્યારે લોકો તેમના પ્રત્યે ખોટી સહાનુભૂતિ વ્યક્ત કરીને તેમનું મન ખોતરતા હોય છે. તમે તો કોઈનું ખરાબ કર્યું નથી, તમને આમ કેમ થાય એવો મલાવો કરીને સામા માણસની વાતને જાણવાનો પ્રયાસ થતો હોય છે. આવી અંદરની વાત જાણવા લોકો બહુ ઉત્સુક હોય છે. દુ:ખમાં પડેલો માણસ કોઈ જરાક સધિયારો આપે તો મનની વાત કહી દેતો હોય છે. પણ લોકો તેનો ગેરલાભ ઉઠાવે છે. આપણા દુ:ખની વાત ખોટા માણસને કહેવી નહીં. તે અંદરખાને રાજી થશે અને બીજા બે માણસને કહીને આપણને વધુ દુ:ખ પહોંચાડશે. કારણ વગર જે વધારે પડતી સહાનુભૂતિ બતાવે તેનાથી ચેતતા રહેવામાં ડહાપણ છે. માણસને બીજી કોઈ રીતે નાનો બનાવી શકાતો નથી એટલે નિંદા કરીને તેને નાનો અને હલકો ચીતરવામાં આવે છે. તેમાં નવા રંગો પુરાતા રહે છે. જે માણસ આપણા કરતાં મોટો હોય, શ્રીમંત હોય, શક્તિશાળી હોય, ઊંચા આસને બિરાજતો હોય અને આપણી નજીક હોય તેની આપણે નિંદા કરીએ છીએ. જે આપણાથી નાનો છે તેની ટીકા અને નિંદા કરવામાં એટલો આનંદ આવતો નથી. જે માણસ આપણા કરતાં નાનો છે એને વધુ નાનો બનાવીને શું ફાયદો? તેમાં અહંકારની તૃપ્તિ ક્યાં? કોઈ ભિખારી કેળાની છાલ પર પગ મૂકીને લસરી જાય તો એટલી મજા નહીં આવે, પરંતુ કોઈ શેઠ નીચે ગબડી પડશે તો તે જોવાની મજા આવશે. મોટા માણસોની નાની વાતો સાંભળવામાં લોકોને વધુ રસ હોય છે. એની પાછળ મન એમ કહેતું હોય છે, ‘જોયા મોટા માણસો તેના કરતાં તો આપણે અનેકગણા સારા.’ આપણે કોઈની પ્રશંસા કરીશું તો લોકો બહુ ધ્યાન નહીં આપે. આપણે કહીશું કે ફલાણા માણસે બહુ પ્રગતિ કરી. નસીબદાર છે જલદીથી પૈસા થઈ ગયા. ઘણો કાબેલ. તો લોકો કહેશે ‘જવા દોને વાત.’ એ કેવી રીતે પૈસાદાર થઈ ગયો એ બધા જાણે છે. આડાઅવળા ધંધા છે નહિતર એમ થોડા રાતોરાત પૈસાદાર થઈ જવાય. ફુગો ફૂટશે ત્યારે ખબર પડશે, પરંતુ તમે કહેશો કે પેલા માણસે બેઈમાની કરીને પૈસા મેળવ્યા છે. ધોખેબાજ છે. ભ્રષ્ટાચારી છે. તેની કાળી કમાણી છે તો લોકો સ્વીકારી લેશે. કાં તો સાંભળી લેશે. કોઈ એમ નહીં કહે કે તમે જે કહો છો તે બરાબર નથી. તેના અંગે આવી વાત કદી સાંભળવા મળી નથી. આપણે કોઈ ચોર છે એ વાત સ્વીકારી લઈશું, પરંતુ કોઈ મહાત્મા છે એ વાત સ્વીકારવાને મન નહીં થાય, કારણ કે આ બાબત આપણા અહંકારથી વિપરીત છે. માણસ બીજાના દોષો જોવાનું ટાળે અને ગુણગ્રાહી બને ત્યારે તે સત્યની વધુ નજીક હોય છે.

જ્યારે પુરુષ સ્ત્રીને કહે છે કે આપણે મિત્રો તરીકે રહીએ ત્યારે મને એ જૂઠો લાગે છે. ધર્મની બહેન નામના શબ્દો મને બકવાસ લાગ્યા છે. આ બધામાંથી મને પંજાબીઓ કહે છે એમ ‘પહલે ભૈયા, ફિર સૈયા’ની વાસ આવે છે

બક્ષી સદાબહાર - ચંદ્રકાંત બક્ષી જીવનની ઋતુઓ બદલાય છે, હવામાન તબદીલ થતું રહે છે, પણ બે શબ્દો મનુષ્યના પ્રથમ શ્ર્વાસથી અંતિમ ઉચ્છ્વાસ સુધી રહે છે: પ્રેમ અને દોસ્તી! આ બે શબ્દો વિનાના મનુષ્યનું અસ્તિત્વ લગભગ નિર્જીવ બની જાય છે. પ્રેમ શું છે, અને મૈત્રી શું છે, એવા પ્રશ્ર્નો આપણે ભાગ્યે જ આપણી જાતને પૂછ્યા છે, પણ શરીરમાં બે ફેફસાં છે એમ માણસની જિંદગીમાં પ્રેમ અને દોસ્તી છે. મારે માટે પ્રેમનું પાત્ર સ્ત્રી છે, મૈત્રીનું પાત્ર પુરુષ છે. હું સ્ત્રીની સાથે મૈત્રી જ ફક્ત રાખી શકતો નથી. અંતે એ મૈત્રીએ પ્રેમરૂપે ખીલવું જ પડશે. પુરુષની સાથે પ્રેમની શરૂઆત અંતે દોસ્તીમાં પરિણમે છે. દોસ્તી સમાંતર કે હોરિઝોન્ટલ વ્યાપમાં વિસ્તરે છે, પ્રેમની ગતિ ઊર્ધ્વ કે વર્ટિકલ છે. મારે હોરિઝોન્ટલ અને વર્ટિકલનો આ ક્રોસ કે સલીબ ઉપાડીને જિંદગી ગુજારવાની છે. જ્યારે પુરુષ સ્ત્રીને કહે છે કે આપણે મિત્રો તરીકે રહીએ ત્યારે મને એ જૂઠો લાગે છે. ધર્મની બહેન નામના શબ્દો મને બકવાસ લાગ્યા છે. આ બધામાંથી મને પંજાબીઓ કહે છે એમ ‘પહલે ભૈયા, ફિર સૈયા’ની વાસ આવે છે. અને કદાચ પ્રેમ અને દોસ્તીને સમજવામાં માણસ જિંદગીના છેલ્લા દિવસ સુધી નાકામિયાબ રહે છે. એક ઉંમર હોય છે પ્રેમ થઈ જવાની, અને એક ઉંમર હોય છે પ્રેમ કરવાની, અને એક ઉંમર હોય છે પ્રેમ કરી લેવાની, અને એક ઉંમર હોય છે પ્રેમની નિષ્ફળતાનો સ્વીકાર કરી છૂટવાની. દોસ્તી જુદી વસ્તુ છે. કૉફીના કપોમાં, શરાબના ગ્લાસોમાં, ગાળો બોલવામાં, લોહીની ભાષામાં, સિગારેટના ધુમાડામાં, ભાગતી ટેક્સીઓમાં, મૃત દોસ્તની જલી ચૂકેલી ચિતામાં અંગારને સૂકી આંખોથી જોતાં જોતાં મેં દોસ્તીઓ નિભાવી છે. પ્રેમને ગુણવાચક વિશેષણોનો ટેકો આપવો પડે છે, દોસ્તી મુઠ્ઠીઓ ખોલીને ક્ષિતિજની પાછળ ફેંકવી પડે છે. પ્રેમમાં નો-હાઉ નથી, વિદ્વત્તા નથી, વ્યાકરણ નથી. પુરુષ થવા ઈચ્છતા છોકરાનું એ પ્રથમ પુુરુષત્વ છે. પ્રેમમાં સફળતા એ ટ્રેજેડી છે. પડદો પડી જાય છે. બહારની દુનિયા બંધ થઈ જાય છે, સૌંદર્ય ૩ રાત અને ર દિવસની ચાંદની છે, માટે જ કદાચ હનીમૂનની પૅકેજ ટૂરો ૩ રાત અને ર દિવસની હોય છે. સૌંદર્યને જૂનું થઈ જવા માટે એટલો સમય કાફી છે. અતિ-પરિચય સૌંદર્યનું મૃત્યુ છે. પ્રેમમાં દરેક પુરુષ કર્મયોગી હોય છે. પ્રેમમાં નિષ્ફળતા એ સારી વસ્તુ છે. બૅટરીઓ ચાર્જ થઈ જાય છે, બુસ્ટર-રૉકેટ ફાટે છે, ડૉકિંગ થાય છે. ડિ-ડૉકિંગ થાય છે, પ્રેમ ટે્રેજેક્ટરીની બહાર નીકળી જાય છે. પ્રિયનું મૃત્યુ કે ડિવોર્સ એ પ્રેમનો સ્પ્લેશડાઉન છે. કેક પરના આઈસિંગની જેમ પ્રેમ પર કવિતા સ્ફૂરે છે, પશ્ર્ચાત્ સંગીતનું ફેડ-આઉટ થાય છે. કાળી મૂછો, જાડી પ્રિયાઓ, મલમલ અને મખમલ, લવન્ડર રંગછાયાઓ... એ પશ્ર્ચિમનો પ્રેમ હતો. આપણે ત્યાં મંગળ વચ્ચે આવે છે, શનિ છે, ગુરુ નપુંસક છે, રાહુ-કેતુ છે. અહીં ગુરુ અને શનિ પ્રેમ કરે છે, મંગળ અને મંગળ પ્રેમ કરે છે, પુરુષ અને સ્ત્રી એ માત્ર અકસ્માતો છે. જો મહાન પ્રેમી પુરુષ છે તો એના માથામાં એક સ્ક્રૂ લૂઝ હોવો જોઈએ, જો એ સ્ત્રી હોય તો ઘણા સ્ક્રૂ! પ્રેમમાં સ્ત્રી સશક્ત સેક્સ છે, અને પુરુષ કૉમિક સેક્સ છે. હવે ચાંદસા મુખડા નથી. ચંદ્ર પર ઊતરેલા માણસે ચંદ્રની બધી જ બદસૂરતી ટીવી પર બતાવી દીધી છે. દિલ હવે બદલી શકાય છે. પ્રેમમાં રહસ્ય રહ્યું નથી. કાંચળી ઉતારેલા સાપ જેવું નગ્ન શરીર જોયા પછી સેક્સનો ગ્લેમર નીકળી ગયો છે. દરેક નગ્ન ધડ સમાન લાગે છે. ધડ ને ચહેરા જ શરીર બનાવે છે અને બીજી વ્યક્તિની ઉપસ્થિતિનું એકાંત સેક્સ ભડકાવે છે. બાકી, સેક્સ એકલી વ્યક્તિમાં માત્ર એક આયામી છે, અંધ છે, એનામાં વહેતા પરપોટા જેટલું પણ ચેતન નથી. મારે માટે પ્રેમ દૈહિક છે, મૈત્રી બૌદ્ધિક છે. બુદ્ધિહીનને હું સહન કરી શકતો નથી. બુદ્ધિમાન સ્ત્રી સાથે સેક્સ એ શેમ્પેઈન સાથે કેવિયાર છે, અને શેમ્પેઈન-કેવિયારના લુત્ફનો મને અહેસાસ છે, અનુભવ છે, અનુભૂતિ છે. પ્રેમમાં ઈન્ટેન્સિટી છે. દોસ્તીમાં ઈન્ટિમસી છે. શત્રુ થવાનું માન હું દરેકને આપતો નથી. બહુ જ ખુશકિસ્મત માણસો મારા શત્રુઓ બની શકે છે. બુદ્ધિમાં એ મારો સમકક્ષ અથવા ઉચ્ચકક્ષ હોય તો, હું એને શત્રુ બનવાની તક આપું છું, કારણ કે એ મારી ખાનદાનીની તાસીર છે. પ્રેમ સૌથી વિકટ રહસ્ય છે, દોસ્તી સૌથી પ્રકટ ચમત્કાર છે. વીસ વર્ષ સુધી અસ્થમા કે ડાયાબિટીઝ હોય તો મનુષ્ય એના અસ્થમા અથવા ડાયાબિટીઝને દોસ્તરૂપે જુએ છે. મારું દર્દ મારી સ્ત્રી કરતાં મારી વધારે નિકટ છે. સેક્સ કરતાં વેદનાનો પરિગ્રહ વધારે સખ્ત હોય છે. બે હાર્ટ-અટેક પછી હું હાર્ટ-અટેક વિના મરી જઈશ તો મરવાની મજા જરા કિરકિરા થઈ જશે. દોસ્તી માણસને પુરુષ બનાવે છે, અને પુરુષને મનુષ્યની ગર્વિતા આપે છે. હેમિંગ્વેના ‘ઓલ્ડ મૅન ઍન્ડ ધ સી’માં વૃદ્ધ માછીમાર દિવસો સુધી મોટી માછલીની શોધમાં દરિયામાં ફરતો રહે છે અને જે માછલીને પકડવાનો છે એને ‘બ્રધર’ અને ‘ફ્રેન્ડ’ કહે છે. પહાડનું શિખર, કૂતરો, રાઈફલ, જેલમાં સાથે જાગતો રહેલો કેદી, સાથે સાથે રહેલા માણસો... આ બધામાં દોસ્તીના અંકુર છે પુરુષમાં. સ્ત્રી જો વર્ષો સુધી માત્ર દોસ્ત જ રહે છે તો એ સ્ત્રીમાં જરૂર કંઈક કમી છે, મનની, શરીરની, સેક્સની અથવા એ... ગુજરાતી સ્ત્રી છે? પ્રેમ અને દોસ્તી છે, રહી છે માટે જીવન ખરાબા ખરાબા પર ટકરાતું રહ્યું છે. પણ તૂટ્યું નથી. પ્રેમ છે, દોસ્તી છે માટે જિંદગી સહ્ય બની છે, અંદરથી તૂટનનો અવાજ સાંભળીને પણ સ્વસ્થ રહી શકી છે. શરીરનો ધર્મ છે મરતા રહેવાનો, અને મનનો ધર્મ છે જીવતા રહેવાનો. પ્રેમ એંજિન-ઑઈલ છે, દોસ્તી કુલન્ટ છે, મશીન ગરમ ન થઈ જાય એ માટે. પ્રેમ અને દોસ્તી એક જ પાત્રમાં મળતાં નથી, જિંદગીને એટલી બધી સંકીર્ણ બનાવી મૂકવાની દાનત પણ નથી. પ્રેમ અને દોસ્તી વચ્ચે એક હનુમાનરેખા જરૂરી છે. સત્તર વર્ષ પાઈપ પી પીને જે અવાજને ખરજનો અવાજ બનાવી દીધો છે, એ અવાજ પ્રેમ કરવા માટે હવે નકામો છે, હવે એ ખરજના અવાજની ઘુટનમાંથી ફક્ત દોસ્તી જ કતરા કતરામાં ટપકી શકશે. પણ ત્યક્તા, તલાકશુદા, અપરિણીતા, વિધવાનો અવાજ આટલો કાતિલ શા માટે લાગે છે, દોસ્ત? ધીરે ધીરે જિંદગી વેર લેતી જાય છે અને વર્ષોની શતરંજ શેષ થવા આવી છે. જેમની સાથે ત્રણ, ચાર, પાંચ દશકો જીવી લીધું હતું એ દોસ્તોના ફોટાઓ પર સુખડના હાર જોઈને હવે ઉદાસ થવાનું પણ હું ભૂલી રહ્યો છું અને એ સ્ત્રીઓને સંકોચાઈ જતાં જોઈ છે, એક સ્ત્રી પ્રેમને સહારે કેટલી જિંદગી સહન કરી શકે છે? હવે સોમવાર પછી શુક્રવાર આવી જાય છે, હવે દરેક દિવસ શનિવારની સવાર છે અને રવિવારની સાંજ છે. ગુજરી ગયેલી જવાનીમાં દરેક દિવસ રવિવારની સવારે શરૂ થતો હતો અને શનિવારની સાંજે સમાપ્ત થતો હતો. ચોવીસ કલાકની દરેક ક્ષણ ચૂસી ચૂસીને જીવી શકાતી હતી. હવે દાંતોમાં રૂટકૅનાલ છે અને કૅપ છે અને બ્રિજ છે અને ડેન્ચર છે અને ચાંદીનું ફીલિંગ છે. હવે દાંત થાકી ગયા છે. જેટલા દોસ્તો જીવે છે એનાથી વધારે દોસ્તો મરી ચૂક્યા છે. ગર્દિશ-આસ્માનીની મજા પણ ચાલી ગઈ છે. હવે સુકાઈ ગયેલી મોહતાજી પ્રેમનો પર્યાય છે, હવે કાળું પડી રહેલું લોહી દોસ્તોનો સહારો છે. પણ જિંદગી ધબકે છે. બડી મહર્બાની, બડી મહર્બાની. ક્લૉઝ અપ તમે આ પૃથ્વી પર સદાચાર અને સત્યનું સામ્રાજ્ય જોઈ રહ્યા છો, પણ મને દેખાતું નથી. -પ્રિન્સ આંદ્રે (લિયો તોલ્સતોય: વૉર ઍન્ડ પીસ: પૃષ્ઠ ૩પપ)

ચાણક્ય- સૌરભ શાહ

‘શત્રુ સામેથી મદદ કરવા આવે તો પણ એ સ્વીકારવી નહીં’

ગુડ મોર્નિંગ - સૌરભ શાહ દુનિયા બહુ ક્રૂર છે અને જેવા સાથે તેવા થયા વિના છૂટકો નથી એવું તમને લાગવા માંડે ત્યારે તમારે ફરીફરીને એક જ વ્યક્તિની સલાહ લેવાની. ચાણક્યની. ચાણક્યનાં કેટલાંક સૂત્રો લોકજીભે છે. એનો રોજબરોજ ઉપયોગ કરનારને ખબર પણ નહીં હોય કે આશરે બે હજાર વર્ષ પહેલાં ચાણક્યે આ સૂત્રો રચ્યાં હતાં. સિંહ ભૂખ્યો થાય તો પણ ઘાસ ખાતો નથી કે લોઢું જ લોઢાને કાપે કે શત્રુનો શત્રુ મિત્ર કે સ્તુતિ દેવોને પણ વહાલી કે મૂર્ખ મિત્ર કરતાં શાણો શત્રુ વધારે સારો જેવાં ઑલટાઈમ ગ્રેટ સુવાક્યો પરનો કૉપીરાઈટ ચાલુ હોત તો આજે ચાણક્યના વારસદારો ભારતના સૌથી ધનિક નાગરિકો હોત. પત્નીએ પતિને વશ રહેવું કે સ્ત્રીનો વિશ્ર્વાસ ક્યારેય ન કરવો એવાં અનેક ચાણક્ય સૂત્રો આજના વખત માટે અપ્રસ્તુત છે. આ કે આવાં કેટલાંક સૂત્રોની અવગણના કરીએ તો બીજો ઘણો મોટો ખજાનો ચાણક્ય પાસેથી તમને પ્રાપ્ત થાય. ચાણક્ય આજની તારીખે જીવતો હોત તો મલ્ટિનેશનલ કંપનીઓના મૅનેજમેન્ટ ક્ધસલ્ટન્ટથી માંડીને પ્રાઈમ મિનિસ્ટરના પોલિટિક્લ ઍડવાઈઝર સુધીના જૉબ એના માટે ખુલ્લા હોત. અને સાઈડમાં ચિંતક-વિચારક તરીકેનાં એનાં પ્રવચનો ગોઠવવા માટે લાયન્સ-જાયન્ટ્સ-રોટરી અને ગુજરાતી જ્ઞાતિઓનાં સોશ્યલ ગ્રુપ્સ એની કુટિરની બહાર લાઈન લગાવતાં હોત. ચાણક્યે કૌટિલ્યના નામે અર્થશાસ્ત્રનો ગ્રંથ લખ્યો જેનો અંગ્રેજી અનુવાદ પૅન્ગિવિન જેવી આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય પ્રકાશન સંસ્થાના બેસ્ટ સેલર્સના લિસ્ટ પર કંઈ કેટલાય વખતથી છે. ચાણકયને કેટલાક લોકો અનૈતિક અને સ્વાર્થી વાતોના પ્રચારક તરીકે ઓળખે છે. ચાણકયનાં સૂત્રોને જોવાનો એ એક દૃષ્ટિકોણ છે. દુનિયામાં તમે જેવા સાથે તેવા થવા માગતા હો ત્યારે ચાણકય તમને અન્એથિકલ કે ઈમ્મોરલને બદલે પ્રૅક્ટ્કિલ વધુ લાગશે. પોતાનું કે પોતાના રાષ્ટ્રનું હિત સાચવવાની સલાહને સ્વાર્થી બનવાની સલાહ કોઈ ગણતું હોય તો ભલે ગણે. ચાણકયના બે હજાર વર્ષ બાદ થઈ ગયેલી અમેરિકન વિદુષી ઍય્ન રૅન્ડ (‘ધ ફાઉન્ટનહેડ’ અને ‘એટલસ શ્રગ્ડ’ નૉવેલ્સ ફેઈમ) એ ‘ધ વર્ચ્યુ ઑફ સેલ્ફિશનેસ’ પુસ્તક નથી લખ્યું? ખૂબ બધાં કામ ચડી ગયાં હોય ત્યારે પ્રાયોરિટી કયા કામને આપવી એની સૂઝ નથી પડતી. ચાણકય આ મૂંઝવણનું સિમ્પલ સૉલ્યુશન આપે છે: જે કામમાંથી સૌથી વધુ ફાયદો થવાનો હોય તે સૌથી પહેલાં કરવું. ક્યારેક લાગે કે આ બધાં જ કામ નકામાં છે, કશામાંથી ફાયદો થાય એમ નથી તો શું કરવું? એ માટે ચાણક્યને પૂછવા જવાની જરૂર નથી. પોતાનો ફાયદો જેમાં ન થતો હોય એવાં કામ કરવાની કશી જરૂર નથી એવું કોઈ પણ ગુજરાતી તમને કહેશે. ઑન અ સીરિયસ નોટ, એ સંજોગોમાં જે કામ ન કરવાથી સૌથી મોટું નુકસાન થઈ શકે એમ હોય તે પહેલાં કરવું. કેટલીક વાર તમને નવાઈ લાગે એટલી હૂંફાળી વર્તણૂક તમારા શત્રુઓ કે અપરિચિતો દેખાડે છે. એમની આ મતલબી ઘનિષ્ઠતા વિશે ચાણક્ય વારંવાર લાલબત્તી ધરે છે. અનેક સૂત્રોમાં ફેરવી ફેરવીને આ વાત એ આપણા દિમાગમાં ઠસાવવા માગે છે કે શરાબીના હાથે દૂધનો પ્યાલો પીવો નહીં, એમાં શરાબ હોવાની શક્યતા નકારી શકાય નહીં. દુષ્ટો ચાલાક હોય છે, તમને મદદ કરવા માટે લંબાયેલો એમનો હાથ કયારે તમારું ગળું પકડી લે એ કહેવાય નહીં. કોઈ વ્યક્તિ તમારું વધુ પડતું સન્માન કરવા લાગે કે અચાનક લળીલળીને વાત કરવા લાગે તો તમારે સાવધ થઈ જવું. આ દેખાડુ નમ્રતા પાછળ નક્કી એનો સ્વાર્થ હોવો જોઈએ. કોઈ પણ કાર્ય કરતી વખતે અગાઉ ક્યારેક પણ જેની સાથે દુશ્મનાવટ થઈ ચૂકી હોય એવી વ્યક્તિની મદદ ન લેવાય એવું ચાણક્યે ગાઈબજાવીને કહ્યું છે. સામેથી સપોર્ટ આપવા આવે તો પણ નો, થૅન્ક યુ કહીને એને પાછો કાઢવાનો. કારણ કે એ તમને એટલા માટે ટેકો આપવા માગે છે કે કાલ ઊઠીને તમે એના સહારે હો ત્યારે એ ટેકો ખસેડીને તમને પાડી નાખવાની એને તક મળે અને જૂના હિસાબોની વસૂલી થઈ જાય. ચાણક્યની બીજી એક વાત ખાસ યાદ રાખવાની કે કોઈ માણસ તમારી પાસે કશું માગવા આવે તો એની ઉપેક્ષા કરવી નહીં. એ વખાનો માર્યો હશે તો જ તમારી સામે હાથ લંબાવીને ઊભો હશે. નસીબે એને ઝાપટો મારી હોય ત્યારે એને સહાય કરવાને બદલે એનું અપમાન કરીને એની હેરાનગતિમાં ઉમેરો કરવાની ભૂલ ક્યારેય કરવી નહીં. પણ અહીં ચાણક્યના આ સૂત્ર સાથે અન્ય સૂત્રો પણ મૂકવાં જરૂરી છે. કાયદામાં જેમ ફલાણી કલમને ઢીંકણી કલમના સંદર્ભમાં વાંચવાની હોય એવું જ કંઈક અહીં પણ છે. મદદ માગનારને તરછોડવો નહીં એવી સલાહ સામે ચાણક્યે અગાઉ એમ પણ કહ્યું છે કે નીચ કે દુષ્ટ માણસ પર ક્યારેય ઉપકાર કરવો નહીં. સાપને દૂધ પિવડાવવાથી એનામાં રહેલા ઝેરની જ વૃદ્ધિ થાય છે. (જોકે, સાપ દૂધ પીતો જ નથી એવું સ્વ. વિજયગુપ્ત મૌર્ય પચાસ વખત લખી ગયા, છતાં આપણામાંથી એ અંધશ્રદ્ધા ગઈ નથી.) દુષ્ટ પર ઉપકાર કરવાનો વિરોધ કરતાં ચાણક્ય કહે છે કે એવા માણસોને આપણે કરેલા તમામ ઉપકાર ઓછા લાગે છે અને એટલે એ આપણા ઉપકારને પોતાનું અપમાન સમજી બેસે છે. માટે એવા લોકોને મદદ કરવાથી દૂર જ રહેવું. ટૂંકમાં યાચકની અપેક્ષા સંતોષતાં પહેલાં તમારી કોઠાસૂઝ અને તમારા પૂર્વાનુભવથી જાણી-પારખી લેવું કે તમારું દાન, તમારી મદદ સુપાત્રે જાય છે કે કુપાત્રે. ચાણક્ય કહે છે કે શત્રુની સાથે ગમે તેવી દુશ્મનાવટ થઈ હોય તોય એની આજીવિકા નષ્ટ ન કરવી. કોઈ પણ વ્યક્તિને ભીંતસરસી ધકેલી દેવાથી, એની પાસેથી તમામ દિશાઓ છીનવી લેવાથી, એ જીવ પર આવીને, મરણિયો બનીને તમારા પર હુમલો કરશે. પોતાનામાં રહેલી તમામ તાકાત નિચોવીને હુમલો કરશે. બમ્બૈયા હિન્દીમાં એને મરતા ક્યા નહીં કરતા ફિનોમિનન કહેવાય છે, તમે શત્રુની રોજીરોટી પણ છીનવી લેશો તો એ આજે નહીં તો દસ વર્ષે એનો બદલો લેશે જ. એવા ઘણા બધા દાખલા આપણી આસપાસ પડ્યા છે. તો હવે ધ્યાન રાખવું. બીજું, એરંડા જેવાં તકલાદી વૃક્ષોનો સહારો લઈને હાથીને ક્રોધિત ન કરવો. મહાશક્તિશાળી સામે બાંયો ચડાવવી હોય તો પહેલાં તપાસી લેવું કે એવો જ શક્તિશાળી ટેકો તમને છે કે કેમ? હાથીને ગુસ્સે કર્યા પછી છુપાઈ જવાનું આવે ત્યારે એરંડા કરતાં વટવૃક્ષની આડશ વધારે ઉપયોગી નીવડતી હોય છે. સાચી વાત? બિલકુલ સાચી વાત. કોઈ કંઈક પૂછે તો એનો ફટ દઈને જવાબ ન આપી દેવાય. પ્રશ્ર્ન પાછળનો હેતુ શું છે તે વિચારવું. પ્રશ્ર્નકર્તાની દાનત તપાસવા તમારે પ્રતિપ્રશ્ર્ન કરવો. શઠ લોકોની આદત હોય છે કે નિર્દોષ લાગતા સવાલો પૂછીને પોતાની ધાર્યી વિગતો કઢાવી લેવી. માટે જ ચતુર લોકો સીધો જવાબ આપવાને બદલે મોઘમ ઉત્તર આપીને વણબંધાયેલા રહે છે. આ સલાહ ચાણક્યે રાજનીતિના સંદર્ભમાં આપી છે. રોજિંદા વ્યવહારમાં પણ ઘણા એનો અમલ કરે છે. ચાણક્યના કયા વિચારોને જીવનમાં ઉતારવા અને કયા છોડી દેવા એનો નિર્ણય વાંચનારે પોતે કરવાનો. ચાણક્યની ડહાપણભરી વાતોમાં હજુ રસ પડે છે? ‘તમામ સંબંધો સ્વાર્થને આધીન છે’ ગુડ મોર્નિંગ - સૌરભ શાહ ધન વિશે ચાણકયે કહ્યું કે માણસે પોતે અમર છે એમ માનીને ધનનો સંગ્રહ કરવો જોઈએ. અર્થાત્ ‘આજે નહીં તો કાલે, મરવાનું તો નિશ્ર્ચિત જ છે. ક્યાં આ બધી લક્ષ્મી છાતીએ બાંધીને લઈ જવાની છે’ એવા વિચારો કરીને માણસે ઉદ્યમ કરવામાં આળસ કરવી નહીં. પૂરતા ધન વિના, જો વૃદ્ધાવસ્થા લંબાય તો, જીવન આકરું બની જાય. કમાણી કરવા માટે કેટલાક લોકો ‘પાપી પેટને ખાતર કરવું પડે છે’ એવું બહાનું આગળ ધરીને કોઈ પણ પ્રકારનાં હીન કામો કરવા તૈયાર થઈ જાય છે. પણ ચાણકય કહે છે કે ‘માણસ ભૂખ્યા પેટે પણ જીવી લેતો હોય છે.’ બે ટંકના ભોજન માટે અનૈતિક કામ કરવાં અનિવાર્ય નથી હોતાં. ભૂખ ક્યારેય વ્યક્તિની ખુમારીને તૂટવા દેતી નથી. પાંગળું મનોબળ જ માણસની નિષ્ઠાને ડગમગાવી દે છે. બહુ સરસ વાત છે આ - ભૂખ્યા રહીને પણ જીવી શકાય છે. ચાણકય માને છે કે ચતુર માણસને ક્યારેય રોજી-રોટીનો ભય નથી સતાવતો. પોતાની વ્યવહાર કુશળતાથી એ ગમે તેવા કપરા સંજોગોમાં આજીવિકા મેળવી લે છે. ધન વિશેની એક કડવી સચ્ચાઈ ચાણકય પાસેથી જાણી લઈએ. એ કહે છે કે પૈસા વિનાના માણસની સાચી શિખામણને પણ કોઈ કાને ધરતું નથી. બીજી એક વાત ચાણકય કહે છે કે જરૂરી દ્રવ્યની જોગવાઈ કર્યા વિના કોઈપણ કાર્યનો આરંભ કરવો એ રેતીમાંથી તેલ કાઢવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરવા બરાબર છે. કામ તો શરૂ કરો, પૈસાની જોગવાઈ આગળ જતાં આપોઆપ થઈ રહેશે એવું કહેનારાઓની સલાહ માનનારાઓ ભવિષ્યમાં ઊંધે માથે પછડાય છે. જે કામ માટે જેટલા ધનની આવશ્યકતા હોય તે અંગે કાર્યના આરંભે જ નિશ્ર્ચિત ગોઠવણ થઈ ગઈ હોવી જોઈએ. ચાણકયના આ એક સૂત્રને ઉવેખવાની બેદરકારી પણ ન ચાલે: ‘દરેક પ્રકારના પ્રયત્નો કરીને સંપત્તિ એકઠી કરવી જોઈએ. આ સલાહ રાજા માટે છે અને દરેક માણસ પોતાના મનોરાજ્યનો નૃપ છે એવું માનીને તમે ચાલી શકો છો. સ્વકલ્યાણ માટે કે પરોપકાર માટે સંપત્તિ હોવી અનિવાર્ય. આડ વાત. ગો. મા. ત્રિ.નો સરસ્વતીચંદ્ર સુવર્ણપુર છોડીને ગાડામાં મનોહરપુરી થઈ રત્નનગરીની દિશામાં જતો હતો ત્યારે રસ્તામાં અર્થદાસ નામનો વાણિયો પોતે ગરીબ અને લાચાર છે એવું કહીને સરસ્વતીચંદ્રને કરગરતો હતો. આવે વખતે સરસ્વતીચંદ્રને પોતાની જાતની ઘૃણા ઉપજી કે હું શા માટે છતી લક્ષ્મીએ અકિંચન થઈ ગયો. ગોવર્ધનરામ માધવરામ ત્રિપાઠીના વાચકોને યાદ હશે કે સરસ્વતીચંદ્રના પિતા પાસે આઠથી દસ લાખ રૂપિયા હતા. ૧૮૮૦-૯૦ના ગાળામાં આજના અમુક સો કરોડ રૂપિયા થાય. સરસ્વતીચંદ્રની પોતાની પાસે માનો વારસો મળ્યાથી લાખની મૂડી તેમ જ વાલકેશ્ર્વરમાં પિતાના ત્રણચાર બંગલામાંનો એક બંગલો હતો. પિતાની મૂડીમાંથી, જે વારસો મળે એમ હતો તે તો પાછો જુદો. આ બધું છોડીને ભાઈ (સરસ્વતીચંદ્રને એના ઘરમાં પિતા, ઓરમાન મા ગુમાન ઈત્યાદિ ભાઈ કહેતા. ૧૮૮૫માં લખાયેલી નવલકથાની આ વાત છે. તે વખતે દાઉદના દાદાનોય જન્મ થયો નહોતો) પહેરેલા કપડે નીકળી પડ્યો છે. સરસ્વતીચંદ્ર અફસોસ કરે છે: ‘એનું દુ:ખ ભાંગવા જેટલો પઈસો મ્હારી કને હતો, તે મ્હેં છોડ્યો. દ્રવ્યનો આવા પ્રસંગે ઉપયોગ થતો હશે તેનું મને ભાન ન રહ્યું.’ સત્તર વર્ષે એમ.એ. પછી એલ.એલ.બી. અને બૈરિસ્ટર થયેલા વિદ્વાન ગર્ભશ્રીમંતને મોડે મોડે પણ દ્રવ્યનું મૂલ્ય સમજાયું. હાલ તુરંત એની પાસે આપવા જેવું કંઈ નહોતું સિવાય કે ધોતિયાના છેડે બાંધેલી છ-સાત હજારની કિંમતની મણિમુદ્રા અર્થાત્ વીંટી જે કુમુદ સુંદરીની આંગળી શોભાવવા બનાવવામાં આવી હતી. ભાઈએ એ ગરીબ વાણિયાને આપી દીધી. એ વાત અલગ છે કે સરસ્વતીચંદ્રને બહારવટિયો ધારીને પેલા વાણિયાએ ગરીબ હોવાનું માત્ર નાટક કર્યું હતું. આખી વાત કહેવા જઈશું તો ચાણકય રહી જશે. એક વાત નક્કી છે કે ગો. મા. ત્રિ.ના દિમાગમાં આ મહાનવલના લેખન દરમ્યાન ચાણકયના સૂત્રો રમતા હશે. લિટરેચરના સ્ટુડન્ટ્સ માટે પીએચ.ડી.ની થીસિસનો વિષય બની શકે: ‘ગોવર્ધનરામ પર ચાણકયની અસર - સરસ્વતીચંદ્રના સંદર્ભમાં. પૌલ જ્હૉન્સને વિશ્ર્વના કેટલાક ઉત્તમ સાહિત્યકારો, ચિંતકો, વિચારકોની પોલ ખોલતું ‘ઈન્ટલેક્ચ્યુઅલ્સ’ પુસ્તક લખવાનું માંડી વાળ્યું હોત જો એણે ચાણકયની આ સલાહ માથે ચડાવી હોત: રત્ન ક્યારેય અખંડિત હોતું નથી. અર્થાત્ કોઈ પણ કિંમતીમાં કિંમતી મણિમાં પણ ક્યાંક કોઈક પ્રકારની નાનકડીય ખરાબી હોવાની. જેવું રત્નનું એવું જ મહાપુરુષોનું. વ્યક્તિ સાધારણ હોય કે અત્યંત પ્રતિભાવાન, એના નાના નાના અવગુણોને જ કેન્દ્રમાં રાખીશું, એનામાં રહેલા સદ્ગુણો પર નજર નહીં રાખીએ તો નુકસાન આપણને જ છે, એને નહીં. ચાણકય નીતિના ગ્રંથમાં જે સૂત્ર સોનાના અક્ષરે લખાવું જોઈએ તે હવે આવે છે: ‘તમામ સંબંધો સ્વાર્થને આધીન છે.’ બે રાજ્ય વચ્ચે હોય કે બે વ્યક્તિઓ વચ્ચે, પરસ્પર સ્વાર્થ ન હોય તો સંબંધો બંધાતા જ નથી. પ્રયોજન વિનાનો, હેતુ વિનાનો સંબંધ હોઈ શકે જ નહીં. એક આખું પુસ્તક લખાય એવી માર્મિક વાતો આ એક જ સૂત્રમાં ઠાંસી ઠાંસીને ભરેલી છે. ઘણા લોકોને પોતાની નબળાઈઓ જાહેરમાં કે અન્ય વ્યક્તિઓ સમક્ષ પ્રગટ કરી દેવાની બહુ હોંશ હોય છે. ભાઈ, મારાં નસીબ એવાં ફૂટેલાં નીકળ્યાં કે ધંધામાં ચાર કરોડની ખોટ ગઈ - કોઈએ પૂછયું નહીં હોય તો સામેથી કહેશે. કે પછી, શું કરું આ બધું મારી આળસનો પ્રતાપ છે - એવું કહેશે. કહેનારને લાગે કે આમ કહીને પોતે બહુ મોટી નિખાલસતા દેખાડી રહ્યા છે, પોતે કેટલા પારદર્શક છે એવું સ્થાપી રહ્યા છે. પણ દરેક સાંભળનારનું મન તમે કળી શકવાના નથી. ચાણકય કહે છે કે પોતાનાં છિદ્રોની જાણ ક્યારેય કોઈને ન કરવી. કારણ? તો કહે: શત્રુ હંમેશાં તમારી નબળાઈઓ વિશે જાણકારી મેળવીને એના પર જ પ્રહાર કરે છે. આ સાથે ચાણકય સલાહ આપે છે કે શત્રુનાં છિદ્રોની તમને જાણકારી હોવી જોઈએ એટલું જ નહીં લાગ મળ્યે એનાં છિદ્રો પર પ્રહાર પણ કરવો જોઈએ અને જ્યાં સુધી શત્રુનાં છિદ્રોનો તાગ ન મળે ત્યાં સુધી એને મિત્રતાના ભ્રમમાં રાખવો જોઈએ. ચાણકયનું એક ઔર સૂત્ર કોતરાવી રાખવા જેવું છે: સંયોગવશાત્ ઊધઈ પણ સુંદર આકૃતિ દોરે છે. અર્થાત્ લાકડાની દુશ્મન એવી ઊધઈ લાકડાને અંદરથી ખોખલું બનાવી દે ત્યારે કોઈ કોઈ વખત સપાટી પર સુંદર આકૃતિ સર્જાયેલી હોય એવું દેખાય છે. દુર્જન દ્વારા તમને લાભ થયો છે એવું જતાવવાની કોઈ કોશિશ કરે ત્યારે તમારું ધ્યાન સપાટી પરની ડિઝાઈન તરફ નહીં પણ ખવાઈ ગયેલા લાકડા પ્રતિ જવું જોઈએ. બાહ્ય રીતે કોઈ આપણું સારું કરી રહ્યું છે એવો ભાસ થાય ત્યારે અંદર એનાં શું પરિણામ આવશે તે વિચારવું જોઈએ. ચાણકયની એક ઔર સલાહ હરીન્દ્ર દવેએ માની હોત તો એમને ક્યારેય આ શેર લખવાની નોબત ન આવી હોત: મારી જો શીખ લ્યો તો મુલાયમ થશો નહીં, રહીને સુંવાળા સૌને દુભવ્યાનો થાક છે. ચાણકયે કહ્યું છે કે મૃદુ સ્વભાવવાળા લોકોનું એમના પોતાના આશ્રિતો પણ અપમાન કરતા હોય છે. માત્ર રાજકાજના ક્ષેત્રમાં જ નહીં, બધે આ સૂત્ર લાગુ પડે. સુરેશ દલાલ કહેતા એમ: ડંખીએ નહીં પણ ફૂંફાડો રાખવાનો. આ જ સંદર્ભમાં બીજું એક ચાણકય સૂત્ર છે કે અગંભીર વિદ્વાનને લોકો સન્માન નથી આપતા. આનો અર્થ એ નથી કે માણસે વિદ્વતાનો ડોળ કરવા ઘુવડ ગંભીર ચહેરે ફરવું. અર્થ એ કે વિદ્વાનોએ ઉછાંછળું વર્તન કરવું નહીં. સામાન્ય પરિચિતોને કે દૂરના મિત્રોને તમારી સાથે બોલવા - વર્તવામાં અઘટિત છૂટ લેવા દેવી નહીં અને જો એવું કરે તો એમને ટકોર કરીને રોકવા. આખી દુનિયાનું ડહાપણ પોતાનાં સૂત્રોમાં ઠાલવી દેનારો ચાણકય ક્યારેક તમને કઠોર, લાગણીશૂન્ય લાગે. પણ ના, એવું નથી. એક જગ્યાએ એ એક નાનકડી પણ ખૂબ મોટી વાત કહી દે છે: પુત્ર અથવા તો સંતાનોના સ્પર્શથી ચડિયાતું બીજું કોઈ સુખ નથી. સાચી વાત છે. સંતાનોના માથે હાથ ફેરવવાથી કે એમને છાતીએ વળગાડવાથી માબાપને જે સુખ મળે છે એનાથી ચડિયાતું બીજું કયું સુખ હોઈ શકે આ સંસારમાં.
