The future of air travel?
The future of air travel? Three-storey Sky Whale fits 755 passengers, has virtual reality windows and self-healing wings
- Concept vehicle would have wingspan of 88m and seat 755 passengers
- Designer Oscar Viñals said it would split passengers into three classes
- Each would have their own deck in a modern-day version of the Titanic
- Everyone on board would have virtual reality windows for entertainment

Called Sky Whale, the concept aeroplane it set to be bigger than an Airbus A380, look like a spacecraft and have 'self-healing' wings that repair themselves.
The aircraft would split passengers into three classes, each with their own deck, in a modern-day version of the Titanic’s strict division of passengers.
Called Sky Whale, the concept plane, pictured,
is set to be bigger than an Airbus A380, look like a spacecraft and have
'self-healing' wings. The engines would tilt 45 degrees meaning the
plane could land on runways anywhere in the world. It was created by
Spanish designer Oscar Vinals
The AWWA Sky Whale was created by Spanish designer Oscar Viñals and is so big it was described by Dvice as looking 'more like something thought up for the Transformers movie franchise than a legitimate aircraft'.
The tilting engines would make it possible for the Sky Whale to take off on the spot - and, according to the plans, if it crashes the passenger section would separate from the wings to reduce the loss of life.
The craft matches advances in technology with a huge capacity of 755 passengers, making it economically viable for an airline.
The plane would seat 755 passengers, making it
economically viable for an airline, such as Iberia, pictured in this
concept illustration. Passengers would be divided into three classes:
'tourist class', the equivalent of economy, 'tourist class with sky
views', or business class, and 'first class'
The Sky Whale, pictured, would be built out of
advanced new materials made up of ceramic or fibre composites. It would
also have advanced 'active wings' powered by a hybrid turbo-electric
propulsion system making them much more efficient than today
The Sky Whale would have a wingspan of 88m compared to 80m for an Airbus A380 and 64m for a Boeing 747.
The three classes would be ‘tourist class’, the equivalent of economy, ‘tourist class with sky views’, or business class, and finally ‘first class’, which would also have sky views and ‘all conceivable luxuries’.
It is not clear how passengers would be able to look at the view, though given the size of the craft it is likely to have larger windows than those fitted to the back of current plane seat ones.
Those in economy would not be without, though - their windows would be fitted with virtual reality screens so passengers could see whatever they want.
According to Vinals' concept plans, the giant
aircraft would be powered by three Harrier-style jets and feature a
double fuselage, meaning it could go longer without refuelling. There
would also be micro solar cells on the wings that could draw power from
the sun
The Sky Whale, pictured top, would have a
wingspan of 88m compared to 80m for an Airbus A380, pictured bottom, and
64m for a Boeing 747, pictured in the centre
The Sky Whale would also be longer than current
commercial aircraft at 77m. By comparison, the Airbus A380 is 67.9m long
while the Boeing 747 is 76m long, pictured
Viñals, who is based in Barcelona, said the Sky Whale would be built out of advanced new materials made up of ceramic or fibre composites.
It would have advanced 'active wings' powered by a hybrid turbo-electric propulsion system making them much more efficient than today.
The Sky Whale would have a double fuselage meaning it could go longer without refuelling and would have micro solar cells on the wings so that it could draw power from the sun.
According to Viñals, the engines could tilt to up to 45 degrees meaning they could land on tiny runways anywhere in the world.
They would be controlled by a fly-by wire system that is assisted with active sensors located through the plane’s surface.
In addition to being able to land on small
runways, the tilting engines would also make it possible for the plane
to take off on the spot. These engines would be controlled by a fly-by
wire system assisted with active sensors located through the plane's
surface
If the Sky Whale has to make a crash landing,
the passenger section would separate from the wings to reduce the loss
of life. The effect of all the technology is to reduce drag, fuel
consumption and weight, making it one of the greenest aircrafts
imaginable
Writing about the way the plane could break up, Viñals said: ‘The disposition of the wings and its architecture separates from the airplane’s fuselage like a security measure, that in a hypothetical fatal case of an emergency landing, these could auto-break up to reduce the damages on the passengers section.'
The effect of all the technology is to reduce drag, fuel consumption and weight, making it one of the greenest aircraft imaginable.
In his proposal Viñals said the Sky Whale 'is a concept about the future ‘green’ aircraft designs for the regular airline’s planes of the 21st century…
‘...Is a mixture between today’s airplanes and future concepts based in blended wing body or hybrid wing body architecture.’
Designer Vinals has not announced any plans to build the concept aircraft, pictured

airline's planes of the 21st century. [It] is a mixture between today's

But, to win his heart, you'd have to accept his rather unconventional lifestyle.
Amou Haji has not washed for 60 years, because he believes being clean will make him sick, and his favourite food is rotten porcupine.

To relax he likes to sit down and have a smoke, from a pipe packed with animal faeces.
Mr Haji, 80, says he chose this way of life after going through some emotional setbacks in his youth and since then - perhaps unsurprisingly - he has become a bit isolated.
His home is in Dejgah village in the southern province of Fars in Iran where, once, a group of young men offered to give him a shower - but luckily he managed to escape.
At night he either sleeps in a hole in the ground, which is quite like a grave, or in an open brick shack which concerned locals built for him.
Young, single, looking for love? But Mr Haji also believes being clean will make him sick

As well as cleanliness, Mr Haji also has an aversion to clean food and drink. He much prefers the rotten meat of dead animals and five litres of water a day from a rusty oil can.
But don't think Mr Haji doesn't look after himself - when he wants to look his best he uses car mirrors for grooming, The Tehran Times reported.
And, when he needs a haircut, he simply burns his locks in a fire.
As for clothing, he wears rags and, in the winter, a war helmet to ward off the cold .
The last record of longest time going without showers belonged to a 66-year-old Indian man, Kailash Singh, who had not taken a bath over 38 years.
Mr Haji claims to have beaten that.
Jackie Kennedy affair
Jackie Kennedy 'had an affair with ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev and so did Bobby Kennedy', new book based on interviews with Jackie's 'closest confidantes' reveals
- The Pink Triangle penned by Hollywood biographer Darwin Porter and independent publisher Danforth Prince comes out next month
- It reports alleged conversations with Gore Vidal and Truman Capote about the extra-marital affairs of Jackie Kennedy
- Porter claims Capote told him about Jackie's affair with Rudolf Nureyev while Vidal revealed her affair with another dancer
- A separate 'rumor' exists claiming Bobby Kennedy was caught in a passionate embrace with Nureyev
- Paris gossip magazine Paris Match allegedly claimed Nureyev once drunkenly boasted of an affair with Jackie Kennedy
- In an interview he also boasted that everyone thought he was the sexiest man alive including the Kennedys
- Capote also believed Bobby Kennedy was a closeted homosexual, according to the book
PUBLISHED: 18:42 GMT, 15 January 2014 | UPDATED: 00:57 GMT, 16 January 2014
Claims: The book reports alleged conversations
with Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal and Truman Capote, including Vidal
and Capote's 'revelations' about Jackie Kennedy's love life
Driven to distraction by the amorous betrayals of her husband, Jackie Kennedy embarked on a wild fling with ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev while she was still in the White House, according to a new tell-all book.
Nureyev, who was nine years younger than the First Lady, was also once spotted with Jackie’s brother-in-law Robert F. Kennedy ‘kissing each other passionately in a phone box’, the book claims.
Much has been written through the years about President
Kennedy’s dalliances while in office. His mistresses were famously said to
include actresses Marilyn Monroe and Angie Dickinson, mafia moll Judith Exner
and a 19-year-old White House intern.
But ‘The Pink Triangle’ – due for release on the 20th
anniversary of Jackie Kennedy’s death from cancer in 1994 – suggests the First
Lady wasn’t content to sit idly by while her husband had countless affairs.
According to Globe magazine, which has an
advance copy of the book, it claims Jackie flew Nureyev to Washington in 1963 and they
soon ‘plunged into a secret love affair that lasted years.’
‘Jackie first fell for Rudi the day she invited him and
his legendary dance partner Margot Fonteyn to perform at the White House during
Jack’s administration,’ writes co-author Darwin Porter.
The First Lady arranged a private jet for Nureyev and the
dancer reportedly sat in JFK’s rocking chair and informed the president’s wife:
‘Unlike your husband, I have a powerful back.’
Later days: Jackie Kennedy allegedly had an
affair with Rudolf Nureyev in the 1960s, but they remained close for
decades as they are pictured here in 1983 when she was married to
Aristotle Onassis
While only a few close friends in America allegedly knew about the
fling, the couple remained close after JFK’s 1963 assassination.
They were photographed together in the English
countryside in November 1968 and that same year, Paris Match magazine claimed
the ballet star had been overheard drunkenly boasting about his conquest.
Nureyev, who defected to the west from the Soviet Union
in 1961, made no secret of the fact that the Kennedys fell under his spell.
‘I am the sexiest man alive,’ he told a Danish newspaper
before his death from AIDS in 1993. ‘Just ask Lee Radziwill. Just ask Jackie
Kennedy. And if you don’t believe me, ask Bobby and John-John Kennedy. Nobody
can resist me. Everyone who has gone to bed with me has fallen in love with
me,’ he added.
The book details the lives of playwright Tennessee
Williams and two of Jackie’s closest friends, authors Truman Capote and Gore
Vidal.
Robert Kennedy pictured with the dancer (top) and with Jackie Kennedy (bottom) with whom he allegedly had an affair
Capote told Porter at a 1977 dinner in Key West, Florida,
that Jackie and her sister Lee Radziwill both competed for Nureyev’s
affections.
‘I think Rudi systematically plans to seduce every member
of my family, even my son when he grows up,’ the book says Jackie confessed to
Capote.
Capote was also said to be shocked to learn about
Nureyev’s affair with Bobby Kennedy, whom the writer had long suspected of
being a deeply closeted homosexual,’ says Globe.
An outraged Jackie only ended the relationship when she
saw the dancer paying too much attention to her son, JFK Jr., writes Porter.
He
says she clashed with Nureyev in 1993 when she learned he was encouraging her
son to become an actor rather than go into politics as his family wanted.
A second ballet dancer, American John Kriza, was also
linked to Jackie, according to the book.
All in the family: A new book claims that not
only did Jackie and Bobby have romantic affairs with Nureyev, but so did
her sister Lee Radziwell (seen with Nureyev in 1987)
‘Each of us launched an affair with him,’ writer Gore
Vidal is quoted as saying. ‘Jackie using my apartment when I did not have John
otherwise engaged.’
Although Jackie played the part of the picture-perfect
wife during the marriage, she did spend some time apart from her husband.
At a low point in their marriage, she escaped from the
pressure cooker life in D.C. on an Italian cruise in 1962 with Fiat’s
millionaire kingpin Gianni Agnelli and then sailed the Aegean Sea with
Aristotle Onassis on his yacht, the Christina, the following year.
Camelot's controversy: For decades, it was only former President John F. Kennedy's love affairs that were public
There were rumors of a close relationship with actor
William Holden, although it was never more than speculation.
The new book claims Richard Nixon also tried to seduce
Jackie before the 1960 presidential election.
‘One afternoon, when Jack was making one of his endless
speeches, Nixon made a pass at me,’ Jackie revealed to Tennessee Williams,
writes Porter, who co-authored the book with Danforth Prince.

The 'unprecedented' amounts of ice in the upper Niagara River, caused by the freezing conditions, caused a so-called ice jam and in turn flooding on Grand Island and Cayuga Island in Niagara Falls.
According to historical records, during only one year, 1848, has freezing weather caused the thousands of cubic feet of water per second flowing over the Niagara Falls to run dry, an event thought to have been caused by ice jamming and damming upriver, according to environmentalgraffiti.com.
Ice bridges spanning the Niagara River from bank to bank have formed as a result of various other chilly winters. In 1936, the American Falls, the shallower of the three waterfalls, are said to have frozen over completely.
One of the earliest images showing the frozen falls, in sepia tones, is believed to be from 1911 or 1912, though skeptics have questioned its authenticity because its photographer is unknown. In 1912, an ice bridge broke apart as several people were crossing it, sending three to their deaths.

AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad got an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) because its founder Dr Vikram Sarabhai had an intimate relationship with his protege, Kamla Chowdhry, and wanted her to stay in the city, says a book by psycho-analyst and Chowdhry's nephew, Sudhir Kakar.
Bombay and Calcutta were the obvious choices for IIMs. Calcutta got India's first IIM, but the second IIM came up in Ahmedabad thanks to the efforts of Sarabhai. A week after Sarabhai's 42nd death anniversary, the book published in 2011, has become a topic of discussion in the IIM-A as well as in sections of the social media. Some months ago, a prominent IIM-A don too wrote a blog on the issue.
In his memoirs, " A book of memory", psychoanalyst Kakar says that Chowdhry, a young widow and a friend of Sarabhai's wife Mrinalini, left such a strong impression on the scientist that he offered her a job at ATIRA, the first institution that Sarabhai set up in Ahmedabad for textile research. Soon, they entered into a relationship which lasted for over 20 years, says the book.
However, Chowdhry had begun to get uncomfortable in the triangle and began considering an offer from DCM in Delhi. The book says Sarabhai "used every means at his disposal" to persuade her to stay back in Ahmedabad, including a proposal as the director of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) and even talked to the Tavistock Institute in London for setting up a centre in Ahmedabad.

'Sarabhai successfully lobbied the govt'
When all that did not work out, Kakar writes that Sarabhai brought IIM to Ahmedabad.
"To keep Kamla in Ahmedabad, Vikram successfully lobbied the Indian government. Matters were so arranged that the original collaborator for the Ahmedabad institute, University of California, withdrew its offer and was replaced by Harvard Business School. Vikram became IIM's first director. Although officially Kamla was the research director, Vikram never took a major decision in the running of IIM affairs without consulting her," says the book.
Sarabhai's daughter Mallika Sarabhai however says, "Yes, Papa had a long, intimate relationship with Kamla, but to think that his great dream for a committed management cadre for the nation was just to keep her here is doing great injustice to his vision. I find psychiatrists tend to attribute sexual motives to very action in life!"
Bombay and Calcutta were the obvious choices for IIMs. Calcutta got India's first IIM, but the second IIM came up in Ahmedabad thanks to the efforts of Sarabhai. Christened 'The Streets Of Monaco', the super ship mimics the key landmarks of the wealthy city-state, including the famous Hotel de Paris, Prince's Palace, Loews Hotel, Port Hercule and La Rascasse.
It also boasts a go kart race track that replicates the famous Grand Prix track, as well as a helipad, mini submarine, speedboats, jet skis, swimming pools and Jacuzzis.
A floating palace: 'The Streets Of Monaco' is a concept for a £244million yacht that incorporates landmarks from the city-state, including the F1 track, including go karts
'The idea was to recreate the circuit as a fully-functional kart track able to accommodate three karts side-by-side to allow for plenty of overtaking. By sizing the track in this way it has driven the overall dimensions of the yacht and the placement of the famous landmarks.
'The Monaco story extends beyond this exterior architecture and into the interior spaces giving a seamless transition as guests move between the various areas of the yacht.'
Stretching to a staggering 155 metre in length, the ship accommodates 16 guests and 70 crew and travels at a top speed of 15 knots.
Opulent: The interior of the ship is also designed to invoke the luxurious trappings of Monaco
The team that designed the incredible concept have backgrounds in a wide variety of sectors including marine, aerospace and interior design
Rob added: 'The team all have alternate careers working across various sectors including marine, aerospace and interior design.
'The desire to do something new and interesting as well as a significant interest in storytelling through architecture and environment were the driving forces.'
The ship also boasts a go kart race track that replicates the famous Grand Prix track, as well as a helipad, mini submarine, speedboats, jet skis, swimming pools and Jacuzzis
'We have had a significant amount of interest from the general public wanting to take cruises and a number of enquiries for potential commercial applications.
'We are actively looking for clients either private or commercial with the vision to realise this new and interesting design direction.
'Build cost is incredibly difficult to assess without a fully defined specification, but a starting price of around $400million would be a sensible starting point escalating from there.'
