Party of seven! (septuplets)

Party of seven! World's first surviving septuplets turn 16 (but dad says they can forget the driving lessons until they get jobs)

  • Kenny, Kelsey, Natalie, Brandon, Alexis, Nathan and Joel McCaughey, from Carlisle, Iowa, celebrate their 16th birthdays on Tuesday
  • The septuplets were born after their mother, Bobbi, took fertility drugs
  • The children achieved international headlines after they were born in 1997, with some criticizing their parents for refusing selective reduction
  • Two of the children have cerebral palsy but all are healthy and are doing well at high school

Doctors were unsure if they were going to make it past their first few days, but now the McCaughey septuplets are celebrating turning 16 - and planning driving lessons, college degrees and careers.

Kenny, Kelsey, Natalie, Brandon, Alexis, Nathan and Joel, the world's first septuplets to survive infancy, are marking the milestone on Tuesday, November 19 at their home in Carlisle, Iowa.
'It's sad how quickly it's gone,' their mother Bobbi told a local newspaper of the past 16 years.
Bobbi and her husband Kenny famously declined selective reduction after learning they were pregnant with seven children following fertility treatment, saying it was 'in God's hands'.

'I will always remember the day we found out there were so many,' Bobbi told the Des Moines Register. 'It wasn't like "yoohoo!" There were so many doubts. To a lot of people this might sound trite, but God determined the outcome.'
Learning they had septuplets on the way sparked international headlines that would chart the children's every move.

After the babies were born nine weeks prematurely in Des Moines in 1997, joining their big sister, Mikayla Marie, news crews swarmed their modest one-floor home.
Amid the media frenzy, President Bill Clinton personally called the family to congratulate the family, Oprah welcomed them on her show and companies and strangers scrambled to help out the couple.

Among the donations, they received a 5,500 square foot home, a van, a year's worth of Kraft's macaroni and cheese, diapers for the first two years and full college scholarships for any state university in Iowa.
During the early months, the septuplets drank 42 bottles a day and went through 52 diapers.
But over the years, the media coverage has waned and the coupons for free food have run out - encouraging the family to be frugal.
And from their early teenage years, the septuplets have been helping out the family by carrying out chores, such as their own laundry.
The family still lives in the same house that was donated after the births and continues to use the same van.
And while the four boys and three girls are looking forward to being 16 and driving, their father, who still works at a metal coating plant, warned that they can only have cars once they get jobs.
He is also up against other teenage challenges.
'The biggest challenge is making sure they keep up with certain things but not keep up with certain things, trendy things,' Kenny said of his teenagers. 'Three of them have cellphones and a couple have iPads.'
The family has saved to cover braces for several of the children and the medical needs of Alexis and Nathan, who were born with forms of cerebral palsy.

Both of the children had surgeries, including a spinal surgery to help Nathan walk, over the years but they are doing well, the Des Moines Register reported.
Alexis has also started taking part in beauty pageants for special needs children, taking the 2013 Teen Miss Dreams Made True award in Carroll.
'It feels really awesome,' Alexis told the Carrolls Paper at the time. 'I love just interacting with all the girls because they're really nice.'
Amid the life lessons and support from their parents, the teens are also battling classes at school.
Last year they began high school and have become fully immersed in activities; all are part of the band and perform at halftime at football games.

Five have run cross country, another wrestles, one plays soccer and another enters speech contests, while six were on the honor roll, the Register reported.
'It's fun to see the work pay off,' Bobbi said of her children.
As their lives have become busier, they have fallen from television screens and magazines - from Time magazine to Dateline NBC - that they regularly graced throughout their childhoods.
While Bobbi said she missed the media, the children are less bothered.
'It was kinda cool but in other ways I never liked it, all these cameras following you around everywhere,' Nathan said.

The family are also well aware that they luckily avoided the days of reality TV and didn't get sucked into appearing with their children on a show to help pay the bills.
Putting their former celebrity behind them, the children are now considering their futures.
Brandon plans on going into military service after school, while Kenny hopes to work in construction, Nathan in science, Joel in computers, Kelsey in cosmetology and Alexis and Natalie in teaching.
But while they admit it's a transition phase, they know one thing for sure.
'You never have to worry,' Kenny Jr. said, 'that you are alone.'

MAKING MULTIPLES: WHY DID THE McCAUGHEYS HAVE SO MANY?

At the time of the conception of both Mikayla and the septuplets, Bobbi McCaughey was undergoing treatments of an ovulation-stimulating drug called Metrodin, which primes a woman's eggs for successful conception. But while it often takes repeated doses to get pregnant, with the septuplets, Bobbi conceived the children on the first treatment.
A Time article about the family noted that while doctors can carefully control the number of embryos they insert with in-vitro fertilization, fertility drugs are basically a roll of the dice.
She had been warned that in around 20 per cent of cases, women had seen multiple births - but they were shocked to learn she was carrying seven babies.
While septuplets had previously been delivered, none had lived beyond a few weeks. So the McCaugheys' doctors suggested they undergo 'selective reduction' - in which several of the fetuses are aborted so the others have a better chance at being healthy.
But the couple are religious Baptists and opposed to abortion so did not even consider the procedure.

The thinnest girl in the world

The thinnest girl in the world: Woman, 24, weighs 4st 3lb and has to eat every 20 minutes because of rare medical condition

  • Lizzie, 24, from Texas, has a rare condition shared by just two other people
  • She was born without body fat and finds it impossible to gain weight
  • Bullied at school and online, she is now a motivational speaker and author
  • Thanks to her experience, her ambition is to set up an anti-bullying charity

At just 5ft 2" tall and weighing in at 4st 3lb, Lizzie Velasquez, 24, appears worryingly thin at first glance.
But her tiny frame wasn't caused by an eating disorder. Instead, it is the result of a syndrome so rare that it is shared by just two other people.
Her condition means that try as she might, Lizzie, from Austin in Texas, finds it impossible to gain weight or store fat, and as a result, she's forced to eat up to 60 small meals a day.

Despite the challenges, the courageous 24-year-old insists she wouldn't change a thing about herself and, instead, throws herself into her work as a motivational speaker and anti-bullying campaigner.
Speaking in TLC documentary, Body Bizarre, Lizzie, who was tormented by school bullies and has endured vile abuse online, said she has no intention of attempting to 'fit in'.

'I would never, ever change my appearance, even if I could,' she explains. 'It's taken me so many years to accept who I am and like the person that I see in the mirror so I would never change it just to "fit in".'
But despite her bravery, the condition, which is yet to be fully diagnosed and named, casts a shadow over her life, not least because most of the people who suffer from the syndrome die in childhood.
Her doctor, Dr Abhimanyu Garg, says: 'Lizzie is one of the very few people in the world to have this condition.

'[Sufferers] have very little muscle mass, their limbs look very thin, spindly, and many of these people, they die very early in life.
'Other children with this have had very different experiences. Lizzie is 24 right now so she has beaten these odds.'
Thanks to the illness, Lizzie, who weighed just 2lb 11oz when she was born, has already lost the sight in her right eye and has limited use of the other.
Nevertheless, she has refused to allow that to stop her and has penned two best-selling books, and works as a motivational speaker doing up to 200 talks a year.
Many of her talks focus on a topic close to her heart: that of bullying. Seen speaking at her old school in a scene from the documentary, Lizzie reveals how becoming the subject of cruel comments, both at school and online, affected her life.
'My parents raised me to be completely normal. They never told me I was different,' she explains.
'The only thing is that I was smaller than the other kids but I was just like them. As I got older, I became more aware of why people were staring at me and I started getting really angry.
'I hated the fact that none of these kids wanted to get to know me. In my mind, I'm just like them and I would never tell my parents I was being bullied so my way of coping with it is when I would take a bath and nobody was in the room with me, and that's when I would cry.'
But although dealing with school bullies was tough, a bigger test was to come after she was interviewed about her condition on national TV.

'I was at home, online, and I saw a picture that was really familiar,' she reveals, gesturing towards a still from the interview that had been given the caption 'The Most Ugly Woman In The World',
'I felt like somebody was putting their hand through the computer screen and punching me over and over.
'There were thousands and thousands of comments. The first one said: "I just threw up over my keyboard. You're gross." The second, "eww, kill it with fire, now". Others asked why my parents didn't abort me because I'm so ugly. Can you imagine that?'
Despite the vile comments, Lizzie says she has no fear of bullies anymore and if she were to meet one in future, her response would be: 'I won'.
For now, she's concentrating on the future and the anti-bullying charity she hopes to set up.
'My dreams for the future are continuing to help others,' she explains. 'I want to create an anti-bulling company. Something for kids and adults and teenagers who are struggling and so far, my dreams have come true.'

THE CONDITION SO RARE THAT IT DOESN'T HAVE A NAME

Although the precise nature of Lizzie's condition remains shrouded in mystery, what is clear is that she was born without adipose tissue - body fat.
The main symptom of the condition is an inability to gain weight, although it also appears to affect vision.
The 24-year-old's condition is particularly puzzling because it takes on aspects of other syndromes, including progeria.
Progeria, which is a form of accelerated ageing, has physical symptoms shared by Lizzie including a pointed nose, small mouth and ageing skin.

The most powerful typhoon in history: Nearly 720,000 forced to evacuate as 200mph winds spark landslides and destruction across the Philippines

  • Typhoon Haiyan is a maximum category-five storm with ground winds of up to 195mph
  • Terrifying wind speeds are greater than those of Hurricane Camille which hit Mississippi in 1969
  • Gales whipped up 19ft waves which continue to batter the islands of Leyte and Samar today
  • One person died after being electrocuted by power lines while another was killed by a falling tree
  • Haiyan to pass just north of the Philippine's second largest city Cebu, home to 2.5 million people
  • Around one million people are in shelter areas in more than 20 provinces as army enforce evacuation

The most intense typhoon on record continued to batter the Philippines today, killing three people and forcing almost 720,000 people to flee their homes.
Super typhoon Haiyan smashed into coastal communities on the central island of Samar, 370 miles southeast of Manila, on Friday with maximum sustained winds of about 195 miles an hour and gusts of up to 235 miles per hour.
According to The U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center, which measures average wind speed accurate to every minute, that makes Haiyan more powerful than the 1969 Hurricane Camille, which battered Mississippi in the United States with winds of 190mph.

The Filipino government said the storm has claimed three victims after one person was electrocuted by damaged power lines and another was crushed by a falling tree. It is unclear how the third died but another man is missing after he fell off a jeti in the central port of Cebu.
According to authorities the death toll is expected to rise, with emergency services unable to immediately contact the worst affected areas and Haiyan only expected to leave the Philippines this evening.

'We have put rescue teams and equipment at different places, but at the moment we can't really do much because of the heavy rain and strong winds. There is no power'.
University student Jessa Aljibe, 19, spoke to journalists by telephone from the Samar city of Borongan shortly after Haiyan made landfall, she said: 'The winds were so strong that they flattened all the banana plants around the house',
All telephone contact to the island was later lost as the typhoon moved inland.

Television images from Tacloban city on Leyte Island showed a street under knee-deep floodwater carrying debris that had been blown down by the fierce winds. Tin roofing sheets ripped from buildings were flying above the street.
Visibility was so poor that only the silhouette of a local reporter could be seen through the driving rain.
Southern Leyte governor Roger Mercado announced 31,000 people were evacuated in his landslide-prone mountainous province. He said: 'When you're faced with such a scenario, you can only pray, and pray and pray.'

Mercado told journlalists by telephone, that his town mayors have not called in to report any major damage. he added: 'I hope that means they were spared and not the other way around. My worst fear is there will be many massive loss of lives and property.'
Describing the dense clouds and heavy rains, he said the storm made the day seem almost as dark as night.
He added: 'Please do not underestimate this typhoon. It is very powerful. We can feel each gust, We lost power and all roads are impassable because of fallen trees. We just have to pray.'

An average of 20 major storms or typhoons, many of them deadly, hit the Philippines each year.
The developing country is particularly vulnerable because it is often the first major landmass for the storms after they build over the Pacific Ocean.

Officials in Cebu province have shut down electric service to the northern part of the province to avoid electrocutions in case power pylons are toppled, said assistant regional civil defence chief Flor Gaviola.
President Benigno Aquino assured the public of war-like preparations, with three C-130 air force cargo planes and 32 military helicopters and planes on standby, along with 20 navy ships.
Authorities halted ferry services and fishing operations, while nearly 200 local flights had been suspended. Commuter bus services were also stopped as the storm dumped torrential rain and ripped iron roofs off buildings and houses.
Schools, offices and shops in the central Philippines were closed, with hospitals, soldiers and emergency workers on standby for rescue operations.
'We can hear the winds howling but the rains are not too strong. We have encountered several distress calls regarding fallen trees and power lines cut. We don't have power now,' Samar Vice Governor Stephen James Tan said in a radio interview.

The state weather bureau said Haiyan is expected to exit the Philippines on Saturday and move towards the South China Sea, where it could become even stronger and threaten Vietnam or China.
More than 41,000 people have been evacuated in his province, one of the country's poorest, said Tan.
The Philippines suffered the world's strongest storm of 2012, when Typhoon Bopha left about 2,000 people dead or missing on the southern island of Mindanao.
But now Haiyan's wind strength has made it the most intense to have ever made landfall, according to Jeff Masters, the director of meteorology at US-based Weather Underground.

The Philippine government and some scientists have said climate change may be increasing the ferocity and frequency of storms.
But Masters said warm Pacific waters were an important reason for the strength of Haiyan, adding it was premature to blame climate change based on the scanty historical data available.
The US expert said he expected the damage in Guiuan, a fishing town of about 40,000 people that was the first to be hit on Friday, to be 'catastrophic'.

More than 125,000 people in the most vulnerable areas had been moved to evacuation centres before Haiyan hit, according to the national disaster management council, and millions of others huddled in their homes.
Authorities said schools in the storm's path were closed, ferry services suspended and flights cancelled.
In the capital Manila, which was on the northern edge of the typhoon's path, many schools were closed amid forecasts of heavy rain.
One particularly vulnerable area in Haiyan's path was the central island of Bohol, the epicentre of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake last month that killed 222 people.
At least 5,000 survivors were still living in tents on the island, and they were moved to schools that had been turned into evacuation centres.
Telephone lines appeared to be down where the typhoon first struck 405 miles south east of Manila on the southern tip of Samar island before barrelling on to Leyte Island.

The Philippines has known disaster at the hands of mother nature as recently as 2011 when typhoon Washi killed 1,200 people, displaced 300,000 and destroyed more than 10,000 homes.
In September, category-five typhoon Usagi, with winds gusting of up to 149 mph, battered the northern island of Batanes before causing damage in southern China.
Bopha last year flattened three coastal towns on the southern island of Mindanao, killing 1,100 people and wreaking damage estimated at $1.04 billion.
Cambodian authorities said they were closely watching the development of the world's biggest storm to materialise.
